I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t horse crazy. But finances and urban living made real horses unattainable, so I had to make do with my China horses.
Education, marriage, and career kept the dream of riding unattainable until my husband and I moved to Idaho. I started riding in a Western barn, and my first horse was a cute little Quarter Horse.
In 1994, I met a trainer who showed hunter/jumpers. I was hooked. I loved jumping. So, at the age of 47, I switched to English and loved riding and jumping for nearly 20 years.
As my body began to remind me that I wasn’t young anymore, I decided that it was time to switch to dressage. I moved to Clockwork Farms, a barn owned by Mindy Groth-Hussey, a dressage/eventer rider and trainer. I didn’t immediately take to the sport; it just didn’t have the adrenaline rush of jumping. But with Mindy’s patient training and some wonderful horses, I learned to love dressage as much as jumping.
Today I have two horses, my retiree and Century Club partner, Cinnamon Strudel, a 25-year-old Hanoverian mare, and an 11-year-old British Sport Horse, Daisy. Strudel was imported from Germany and came to me at age 15 as a wonderful, tolerant school master with lovely soft gaits.
My barn family at Clockwork Farms has been wonderful support through the years and especially for the Century Club ride. I’m sure I wouldn’t still be riding without them. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible.
