My name is Bernard Hylton, and I completed my Century Club ride at the Roanoke Valley Pony Club's Fall Frolic on September 14. I had just turned 85, and my off-the-track Thoroughbred, Protect N Serve (Seal), was 15.
It was a special show to me as I have been involved with the Pony Club for over 40 years. Many of my "kids" are now grown and have kids of their own, now getting into Pony Club. I also worked with the local 4-H for many summers.
My farm in Woolwine, Virginia, has hosted unrecognized horse trial events that gave many young people a chance to compete. There have been clinics, some with Lucinda Green, trail rides, and mock hunts on the farm. During these years, I have built cross country jumps on my farm, Green Hill Park in Salem, Virginia, and at the Virginia Horse Center. Fox hunting was also a big part of my life back then.
When I was 75, I decided to put away my jump saddle and become the local dressage "king." Seal and I have made it up to Second Level and still have lots to learn. So just kick on, folks!
