Then We Ate Cake

I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to sign up for a Century Club ride. I hate being in the spotlight, and who wants to admit their age, but I finally agreed. My trainer, Cathy Echternach, arranged a little barn show with Evelyn Pfoutz-Martin judging. Jack Morris and I signed up along with other boarders. It was a rainy March day, the ring was soggy, but we carried on. Friends, trainers, family, the judge, and horses gathered and celebrated.

I am an 81-year-old retired elementary art teacher. My horse is a 20-year-old, 15.3 hand, American Morgan named Spring Hollow Legend and bred by Lynn Skillington. Legend is best described as cute, extremely smart, a trickster, a beggar, and a little devil. We completed Fourth Level Test 3 test and scored 65%. Not bad at all (Did I go off course, which is usual for me? I can’t remember)? The show was over, pictures taken, and we ate cake.

Despite my reluctance and the bad weather, we had a great time.

I came away realizing that the Century Club ride is not about age, what you can and can’t do, or competition. It is about our journey with amazing horses, friends, and the sport. This is the cake.

By the way, our cake was a carrot cake decorated with a dressage ring complete with letters and two riders, Jack on Pinky and me on Legend saluting, and a raccoon on the side. Legend got some and loved it.

Thanks Cathy. Thanks Everyone. Thanks Evelyn
