From: Aledo, Texas
Ages: 76 & 24
Combined Age: 100

Darla began at age 15 in 1964, when she owned and trained her first horse. Within a few short years, she was retraining Quarter Horses into dependable riding horses, beginning a lifelong journey rooted in horsemanship, education, and care.

Over six decades, Darla built a wide-ranging career across many facets of the horse world. Her experience includes managing boarding and lesson barns, teaching riding programs and summer camps, managing an eventing barn, and operating a therapeutic riding program. Since 1995, she has held Master Level Instructor and Certifier recognition with the Certified Horsemanship Association, working across English riding, Western riding, vaulting, and programs for riders with disabilities.

Rosi, a 24-year-old Quarter Horse, came into Darla’s life nearly a year ago. Before that, Rosi served as a patrol horse and Search and Rescue partner with the Oklahoma City Sheriff’s Department, working alongside her owner for more than 20 years. When her owner became terminally ill, she sought a forever home for her beloved horse.

Darla welcomed Rosi with care and intention. Together, they prepared for the Century Club ride through countless hours on the ground and in the saddle, focusing on safe handling, trust, and the nuances of Western dressage. At the show, Darla and Rosi earned their Century Club membership together, celebrating a partnership grounded in service, patience, and lifelong learning. Darla also serves as an admin with the Equine Safety and Standards Network (ESSN). As she often says, “You stop being an instructor when you stop being a student.”
