When I moved to Lexington, Kentucky, about two years ago, there were horses, horses, horses everywhere! Clearly, it was time to start riding again. As I hadn’t ridden for over 15 years and didn’t own a horse, lessons were the way to get back into the saddle. The first lesson was a disaster. Not because I’d forgotten how to ride, but because I couldn’t get on the horse. Literally. My 80+ body no longer had the flexibility and strength needed to swing a leg over a saddle without LOTS of help.
I persisted and, in the process, became hooked on dressage, a discipline new to me. A Century Club member and wonderful friend, Marsha Icko (pictured with me above), told me about me about the Century club… and that became my goal. My teammate was Dune, a 26-year-old patient school horse at Miramonte Equine, where I ride. With Marsha and everyone at Miramonte Equine “spurring” me on, I overcame some physical challenges and was able to complete Introductory Level Test B for the “Scenic Flight Through the Bluegrass” competition on November 8th. Many thanks to The Dressage Foundation for their support of “mature” riders. It was great fun, and I hope to participate in future competitions.
