When I was 12, I was lucky enough to go to a camp that offered horseback riding lessons. I loved it and knew that I wanted to continue riding and just being around horses. It was many years before I could fulfill this wish. When going through a divorce at the age of 50, my friend, who was an instructor at a horse barn, said that I needed to ride a horse. What wonderful advice; it saved my sanity, and I rode for many years at that barn.
When I was looking for a horse, my trainer helped me find “Ruby’s Domino Effect,” a registered Paint. He had everything I wanted in a horse—to seal the deal, his nickname was “John.” My father’s name was John, and sadly he died shortly before I met John.
John had training in natural horsemanship, and I took training with him as well. We continue to have fun doing the groundwork that we learned, in addition to dressage training and trail riding. We’ve been enjoying doing this together for 20 years now.
Three of us in our barn completed our Century Club rides together. It was great fun! Thanks for giving senior riders and their senior horses a chance to keep shining!!
