2004 was a year full of turmoil for our family—job changes, school changes, and a cross-country move. In the midst of all our turmoil, Lombardo arrived. Sweet tempered, four years old, a bit gangly, and a chance for our son to chase his dressage dreams. Their immediate bonding brought welcome calm and stability. In the meantime, I had given up my own riding; tight finances and a career that demanded extensive travel influenced the decision.
Over the years, our amazing son developed Lombardo from Young Rider, to U25, to national Grand Prix and ultimately international Grand Prix, and eventually to a schoolmaster. I rode occasionally, hacking Lombardo and cooling him out. He graciously tolerated my efforts.
Ten years ago, I started thinking about a Century Club ride. It was my dream to share that moment with Lombardo. I’m pretty sure some folks thought I was delusional. Over the years, I’ve ridden again whenever I could. Increasingly, Lombardo has been my partner—kind, tolerant and mostly willing—when I give the correct aids.
My someday finally arrived! Nearly 23 years after joining our family, and nearly 30 years after my last trip down centerline, Lombardo and I had our moment. Thanks to our son for sharing his heart horse. Thanks to this very special horse. Thanks to TDF for The Century Club program and thanks to everyone who has shared this journey.
