I became interested in riding because my friend Kathy Sutherland volunteered at a rescue barn. I would go visit her and see what she was doing with the horses, and decided to “give it a try.” That was several years ago, and I am still as enthusiastic to learn as I was in the beginning.
Onyx and I became a team just a few years ago. She was a companion horse to Bimini, owned by Joy Black. I started working with Onyx and quickly learned she was a mare’s mare. It took us a while to understand and trust each other, but all that time and patience (and carrots) were worth it to me. She has a special place in my heart.
The weather on the day of my ride was uncertain. A coastal Nor’easter storm was supposed to hit our area. Dark clouds, a wet ring with a few mud puddles, and a chill in the air didn’t prevent us from giving it our best. Onyx was steady and took it all in her stride.
I would like to thank Kate Connor and Joy Black for making my Century Club ride possible, and to Joan Fleser for volunteering to scribe for the test. I would also like to thank trainer Melissa Suits, who worked with me prior to the ride. Family and friends made the ride that much more special. Thank you to all of you (and Onyx) for this special day.
